7 Biblical Ways to Keep Going When Life Is Difficult

Life can throw some pretty tough challenges our way, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or ready to give up. Unemployment in certain areas is rising. The number of people unhoused continues to increase and it seems like inflation is impacting every socioeconomic group. But the Bible offers timeless wisdom and encouragement to help us keep moving forward, even when the road gets rocky. If you’re searching for strength, hope, and practical ways to persevere during difficult times, these seven biblical principles can guide and uplift you.

Let’s explore these powerful ways to keep going when life feels heavy.

1. Trust in God’s Promises

One of the most comforting truths in the Bible is that God is faithful and His promises never fail. When life is uncertain, holding onto verses like Isaiah 41:10 (“Do not fear, for I am with you...”) reminds us we are never alone. Trusting in His Word means believing God will provide strength and peace even when we can’t see the outcome. Matthew 6:26 reminds us that God provides for the birds of the air so how much more valuable are you than they? He will be with you and provide for you as well.

2. Pray Without Ceasing

Prayer is a lifeline. It connects us to God and aligns our hearts with His will. The Bible encourages us to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17), which means keeping an ongoing conversation with God. Pour out your worries, ask for guidance, and let prayer be your refuge in hard times. Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us to pray about everything rather than to worry about it so that the peace of God will guard our hearts and mind. When you begin to feel overwhelmed, exchange your anxiety for God’s peace via prayer.

3. Find Strength in Scripture

Reading the Bible can refresh our spirit and renew our hope. The Psalms, for example, are full of raw emotions and faith-filled declarations that remind us God is our refuge and strength (Psalm 46:1). Carry a favorite verse with you as a source of encouragement throughout your day.

4. Lean on Community

God designed us for connection. When life feels difficult, reaching out to fellow believers for support, encouragement, and prayer can be crucial. Hebrews 10:24-25 reminds us not to neglect meeting together, because community builds us up and helps us persevere. You may not have a church home, but now is the best time to visit a local church. Many churches also offer virtual services. Watching online and joining your faith with other believers is a wonderful way to strengthen your faith and possibly receive the physical help you need.

5. Remember God’s Sovereignty

It’s comforting to remember that God is in control of all things, even when circumstances seem chaotic. Trusting in His sovereignty helps us surrender our worries and find peace knowing He is orchestrating our story for good (Romans 8:28). Nothing is a surprise to God. When life throws us a curveball it’s easy to assume that God may not have accounted for the sudden change in our life. But just like in Joseph’s story (Genesis 50:2), often God uses what the enemy meant for evil to accomplish good in our lives so find comfort in knowing that God sees everything we are going through and He will make a way for us.

6. Keep Serving Others

Sometimes the best way to get through difficult times is to focus outward. Matthew 6:33 reminds us to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all the necessities of life will be added unto us. Serving others can shift our perspective, fill our hearts with purpose, and remind us that we are part of something bigger. Jesus’ example of selfless love inspires us to keep giving, even when we feel low.

7. Hold on to Hope

Hope is a powerful anchor for the soul (Hebrews 6:19). No matter how dark your situation feels, God’s hope promises a future full of restoration and joy. The Hebrew word for hope (Tikvah) actually means something closer to cord or rope. Cling to hope and let it fuel your courage to keep going day by day.

Life’s challenges may not disappear overnight, but these biblical ways provide a strong foundation to help you persevere with faith, courage, and grace. Remember, every step forward, no matter how small, is a victory.

Thanks for joining me in this reflection. Keep pressing on—you are never alone, and better days are ahead.

What the Bible Says About Who You Really Are: Your Identity in Christ

Our identity is our sense of self. It is shaped by many factors such as our upbringing, experiences, relationships and culture. According to the Bible, your identity is not determined by your past, your circumstances, your failures, or the opinions of other people. If you have placed your faith in Christ, Scripture teaches that you are loved, forgiven, chosen, created with purpose, and made new through Him.   If you are struggling with defining who you are as a believer, there’s an unshakable foundation you can build on—your identity in Christ. This week let’s explore how two powerful Bible verses, 2 Corinthians 5:17 and Jeremiah 1:5, illuminate this journey of self-discovery and spiritual transformation.  What Does the Bible Say About Who You Are?  The Bible tells us that our identity is ultimately found in God, not in the labels the world places on us or the painful experiences we have endured. When we place our faith in Jesus Christ, we become a new creation....

From Puppy Love to Deep Faith: Growing a Stronger Relationship With Jesus

Have you ever been in love? Most people probably would have answered “yes” without hesitation a decade ago. Yet in today's world, genuine connection can sometimes feel harder to find. Relationships require time, vulnerability, commitment, and a willingness to move beyond the surface. The first stage of many relationships is what we often call “puppy love.” We usually associate puppy love with tweens and teenagers, but infatuation can happen at any age. It is that exciting stage when everything feels new. You are captivated by the person, excited about the possibilities, and perhaps even imagining a future together before you truly know them. But what happens when we experience that same kind of excitement in our relationship with Jesus? Can we fall in love with the idea of Jesus without developing a deep relationship with Him? That question made me reflect on my own relationship with Christ and how my faith has grown over the years. I realized that there is a difference between b...
